Do I need to do this? I can't tell if I'll need any of these (they're listed at the bottom of the page under section D). Finally, here( )they say that I should make a Recovery Media Kit so I can reinstall the applications that I originally got with my notebook. I'm gonna be using my notebook for gaming mostly, if that factors in.ģ.

Should I install sp2? I heard that it's very. (I'm leaning towards the everything secion, I assume updated is if you already have the original drivers and are looking for the updates while everything is basically you get the "newest" version of any drivers you need, including the originals)Ģ. Should I download drivers from the "Updated" section or from the "Everything" section: I mean, can the recovery information on my HD possibly still be in great condition after two years? Because if it's anything less, I'll just dl the drivers and format.ġ. I figure I'll probably have to just format it, but I want to hear from anyone who's better informed on this. Will it work properly? If it did then I don't see why they'd be so insistant on making the Recover Media Kit. What I really want to know is should I just use the Recovery Wizard (without the recovery media kit).

Unfortunately, this was only a small part of the problem. This is what I'll need when formatting, right? I just use any old sp1 XP CD and it'll ask me for this, and when I type it in it's gonna be legal, right? (I told you I don't know much about formatting. I'm thanking you because you inadvertantly solved my OS predicament: I just rememmbered I have this piece of paper with a holographic stamp that I got with my laptop, and I think it has a serial for windows. I've been to some of these sites and unfortunately my model doesnt show up on vaio-link, being it isnt sold in europe. > Re: VAIO Recovery Wizard (without recovery media kit) vs formatting Here is another link from HWA.don't get upset.ahahah ) yes they have had many problems over the years. make sure you do it from the Laptop, as they will identify it as a Sony.īy the way your Win XP will be acknowleged by MS, if you have the details from the Key number sticker on the base opf the Laptop.providing of course the OS has not been changed at any time.

I take it that you personally bought this Laptop new, and although it is out of Warranty, Sony support will help if you supply the full details of Serial number etc.which you can fill out on the site below I just want to know if I can just take the easy way out and use the Recovery Wizard, or should I do it the hard way and format? I'd prefer not to format sicne then I'd either have to get an original Windows XP or (more likely) get an illegal key and not have much chance to update. I've never formatted a system before but I think I can figure it out. Otherwise, what do I have to do to format? Is it sufficient that I download, unzip, and burn the drivers from Sony's site onto a CD or do I need to get something else as well? I should just get the "Updated" drivers, right?

Since I've had it for 2 years I'm worried that the recovery data may have been subject to too much bit rott. I want to know if I'll have any problems if I just use the Recovery Wizard (without the kit) and restore my system that way. I haven't made a "Recovery Media Kit" which they advise you to make (due to a lack of CDs at the tima, and later forgetfulness). I have a notebook (Sony Vaio pcg-frv25) and I haven't fromatted since I got it (2 years).
